This book is based on the field work of a group of Japanese sociologists and anthropologists, mainly between 1968 and 1972, in three villages in Kedah, Kelantan and Melaka. Three first parts of the book are devoted to each of the three villages respectively, recording the social structure, forms of paddy farming and religious practice in each village. The final part deals with the environment and technology of paddy growing. There is a good variety of relevant tables and maps throughout the book as well as an extensive bibliography. 356 pages.
