This collection of articles was published as a result of a meeting between the American Anthropological Association and the Borneo Research Council, the premier body carrying out anthropological and sociological research in Borneo. Anthropologists generally were interested in Bornean research into forms of descent and kinship that were not rigidly patrilineal or matrilineal, but more fluid, i.e. cognate, than in most societies.
