The first part of this book is devoted to the single minded efforts of William Clark Cowie of the British North Borneo Company to both build a railway in the former British North Borneo coupled with the founding of Jesselton, now known as Kota Kinabalu, as the state's capital. This account includes details of the engineering and political obstacles overcome in this enterprise. The book concludes by tracing the development of Jesselton from the late 19th century to the state joining the Malaysian Federation in 1967. 544 pages with many photographs.
