Politics of the Temporary:
An Ethnography of Migrant Life in Urban Malaysia
---
Parthiban Muniandy
Malaysia's significant economic growth in the late 20th and early 21st century has been achieved through the efforts of millions of migrant workers, mainly from neighbouring countries and South Asia. There are currently two million documented temporary migrant workers and probably two to three million more who are in the country illegally. Based on seven years' research amongst this underclass, Muniandy attempts to give voice to the lives they lead, their informal networks and how they cope on the margins of a prosperous society.
