One of Malaysia's academic linguists with an established international reputation applies her skills to the language of her birth place, Penang Hokkien, a patois developed by Chinese settlers from Fujian in China. With over 12,000 entries, this is most comprehensive dictionary of the language published to date. Tan adopts a modified version of the Carstairs Douglas system of orthography to represent what is basically an oral language.
