The author based the is book on various visits to one Malay village in Kelantan over a thirty year period. His initial stay was for 13 months in the early 1970s followed by more than 10 shorter stays of up to a month each. The purpose of the study was to determine how such a village functioned noting its income producing activities, mainly paddy farming initially, lifestyle, land ownership and use, marriage and divorce and population trends among others.
