Nineteenth Century Malaya: The Origins of British Political Control
---
CD Cowan

The British gained their first foothold in Malaya in the late 18th century with the establishment of a settlement at Penang. For most of the succeeding century they had a fairly detached approach to the mainland, confining themselves to Malacca, Penang and Singapore. However within ten years of the Colonial Office taking over from the East India Company in 1867 that policy of non-intervention changed and the British started the process of interference in and then control of the mainland Malay states In this book Cowan examines what brought about this change in policy and what happened immediately afterwards. Fair Hardback  First Edition 286 pages with an index, bibliography and maps, including a pull out one.
