The title, taken from a Malay idiom, refers to the restricted world of both the author and her mother, who had little schooling and lived in an isolated village. The world broadened because her mother was determined to see her daughter educated in a way that she had never been. The author blossomed, but her mother was never fully able to appreciate the release since she then succumbed to the restricted world of being an Alzheimer sufferer. 325 pages.
