This study, based on two years' research in the Pasir Mas area of Kelantan, is an interesting sociological snapshot because it concentrates on two communities, the Chinese and the Thai, who are not only minorities in a predominantly Malay area, but who also can trace their histories back to pre-colonial times. This combination throws up some peculiarities, e.g. the minorities share many common cultural characteristics and similar concerns as their Malay neighbours and trade and commerce is not necessarily dominated by these minorities. 135 pages with a bibliography and index.
