Before their suppression by various colonial powers the inhabitants of the Malay Archipelago had a fearsome reputation as pirates. Henty used this reputaion to create tales of daring adventures by European adventurers for his juvenile audience. This is probably his best known novel of this genre set in Southeast Asia.
