Ultramafic rock is a form of volcanic rock, low in silica content and with poor soil which can be toxic to plants. So where plant life does appear on such rocks, as in Sabah around Mount Kinabalu and elsewhere in the state, it is usually distinctive and often stunted. Changes in climate and land use are now threatening the unique species which grow there.
