In this study Leung sets out to examine the role of the Taotai government official in Shanghai as a link between various groups in a rapidly changing Chinese society in the latter part of the 19th century. Part One deals with the taotai as a link between China and the West, Part Two looks at how he balance his role tradition and modernity in his role and Part Two focuses on him as a bridge between the gentry and merchants. 237 pages including list of tables, maps, and charts, endnotes, list of abbreviations, appendices, glossary, bibliography and index.
