The author first came in contact with the Tempasuk Dusuns during a one year contract as a civil servant in North Borneo in the early 20th century. However he returned there in 1938 as an anthropologist and ethnographer and lived in Borneo until he died in 1957. This enabled him to complete this work which was originally published in 1953. The book is divided into three parts -

- II - Ceremonies &
- III - Folk Stories.
