and subsequent Konfrontasi in Borneo, left the army to become a conflict
academic. He argues unusually that the insurgent movements of today are linked
to those of the immediate prewar era. Analysis today tends to focus on 'the
propaganda of the deed' whereas violent movements in general have a common
