Bock was employed by the Dutch authorities in the 1880s to make an exploratory trip into West Borneo, of which the colonial government had very little knowledge at the time. He travelled along the Mahakkam and Barito rivers. He made meticulous notes of the ways of life of the indigenous people and their titular Malay overlords. This book also includes his accounts of a later visit to Sumatra where he devoted himself to noting the nature and wildlife of the time. 344 pages with appendices and an index and a selection of about thirty coloured plates.
