Hose was a noted member of the Brookes' civil service in Sarawak from the end of the 19th to the early 20th century. As with many of his type, he also found time to explore and write about the country and its people. He became a recognised zoologist and ethnologist and became the principal person responsible for encouraging the production of oil in Miri.
