The author had the benefit of first meeting and becoming friends with the Dalai Lama not long after his period of exile began. He draws on what he discovered of the man in these meetings and through other research to prepare this biography which takes us from the Dalai Lama's birth to his arrival in India.The work particularly concentrates on the political and social conditions of Tibet of the time and tries to establish the part these played in fashioning the well respected world figure of today. 152 pages. There are also two appendices outlining the chronology of the Dalai Lama's life and Tibetan history and a bibliography.
