The Ban Hin Lee Bank, the first bank founded in Penang, owes its origins and success to one of the many penniless Chinese immigrants who arrived in Penang at the end of the 19th century. Within a couple of decades of his arrival, Yeap Chor Ee had started a bank that was to become one of the best known in the country with branches throughout Malaya and in Singapore.
