While many may claim that the increased Islamisation in Malaysia over recent years has worsened women's position in the country, the author's research amongst Muslim women in the nation's capital, Kuala Lumpur, shows this not necessarily to be the case. She discovered that pious women are at the centre of many religious community activities. She also found evidence of women transforming traditional male dominated spaces so that women's contributions are gaining increasing recognition and effect.
