Hansen decided in 1982 to venture into the Borneo rain forest with little more than a bed sheet, a change of clothes and a rattan backpack with items to barter. His trek took him four months over 1,500 miles as he lived with the Penan, the main inhabitants of the forest. At the end of his journey, he turned around and walked another 800 miles to Kuching.
