A no nonsense account of a young man's experiences as a surveyor for roads and railways in Kedah and Kelantan between 1913 and 1918. Wells was an entertaining and observant writer mixing stories of recipes for gin slings with lots of information on the flora and fauna, much of which he presumably had to clear out of his way to get his job done. Condition: The surface cloth of the cover, particularly along the spine, has been worn away in places possibly because of insect attack. There is a former owner's smart personal name plate on the inside front cover. About ten pages have underlinings of one sentence each. There is occasional spotting throughout. Otherwise the binding is tight, text clear and there is mild tanning throughout.
