These memoirs of a Scottish merchant in the Philippines are based on his stay in Manila for about three years in the mid 1800s. As one might expect, being a businessman, he moved little outside the Hispanicised middle classes, but this record is unusual in that it gives a non Spanish view of privileged life in the country in the last century of Spanish rule. Edited and Annotated by Morton J Netzorg. With an appendix on Trade in Pinay, 1857-67 and Four Letters by Nicholas Loney. 295 pages with an index and five black and white plates. Good Hardback. Condition: The cover is rubbed at the edges, particularly along the spine, where the titling is barely legible. The cover is also slightly bent. Less than a dozen pages have minor tears at the edges and one of them has been fixed with tape. The binding is tight and there is medium tanning throughout.
