This memoir of a British official who served for 24 years in the Sarawak Civil Service, 17 of them under Charles Brooke, the second Rajah. The work is unusual in that it gives an insight into the workings of Brooke's Government, of which little has been written that is not in official government papers. It contains much new material, for example on Brooke's ambitions with regard to neighbouring Brunei. With a preface by Robert M Pringle and Otto C Doering III.
