When the European powers, Britain and the Netherlands, arrived in the Malay Archipelago the script of the Malay Language, Jawi, was based on the Arabic script. In the course of time both Britain and the Netherlands Romanised the Jawi script, independently of each other and basing their spellings on English and Dutch respectively. Following Indonesia's and Malaya's independence discussions between both countries resulted in a common spelling system for Malay in the archipelago.
