Penang:
An inside guide to its historic homes, buildings, monuments and parks
Keith Hockton & Howard Tan
Before you groan "Oh, no not another Penang picture book," this one is a bit different. Firstly, it's small enough to fit into a big pocket or a normal handbag and although every page has a colour photo by Howard Tan. It's about the people who lived in the buildings of Penang, rather than about the architectural styles. The book lists approximately a hundred and fifty houses and other places of interest, devoting a page to each. Although the majority of the buildings are in George Town, the book also includes notable sites on the outskirts, such as Penang Hill and Batu Ferrighi Although it is stated to be the second edition, it is, in fact, the third, since it was first published in 2011 and is probably now the most popular guide to the city. 218 pages with a bibliography and an index.
