Only Man is Vile: The Tragedy of Sri Lanka - - William McGowan Although this book is generally unavailable in Sri Lanka, it is essential reading for anyone wanting to get to know the country. Although it was written at the height of the Sri Lankan civil war which ended in 2009 and despite the book's generalisations, it does still hold up asquite an achievement for a journalist who had only spent a few years in the country. As the title suggests, the book is bleak and depressing. However it's also witty. The book does not give or claim to give a rounded view of Sri Lankan life, but it does exhibit aspects of Sri Lankan life that are real even today serving as a useful antidote to more annodyne accounts of the country. 397 pages with an index.
