The Dutch were the first European colonists in Borneo, but had to withdraw for about ten years because of the Napoleonic Wars at the beginning of the century. When they returned, Borneo was not a high priority until the arrival of James Brooke in Sarawak. Based on both British and Dutch archival records, the author, a former academic with the University of Malaya, traces the subsequent power struggle on the island. Thread bound Paperback Reprint.
