Because of the paucity of source material Wheatley acknowledges in his preface that "those who seek to reconstruct events of the Indic past of Southeast Asia are attempting to know what cannot be known." Instead he seeks to tease out the main features of the transformation from tribe to state and from village to city during this period. He hopes by doing so he has been able to lay down pointers for future more detailed research. In spite of the author's modesty the book remains a classic. 470 pages.
