A Compilation of Proverbs and Proverbial Expressions, with Some 'Pantuns' and Riddles, Taken from Earlier Publications
This is one of the earliest attempts to provide a comprehensive picture of a wide range of Malay proverbs and pantuns with proverbial connotations. As Hose states in his preface, almost all of the entries had been published before, mainly in the journals of the Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. Each entry, listed alphabetically, has a translation into English and sometimes some further comment. The book was intended for newly arrived expatriates in Malaya and two pages of notes of a previous owner are laid in. Good Board Book. 174 pages.

Condition: The cover is a bit battered looking with a couple of stains, a couple of small sets of insect holes, which do not carry on past the front end papers, and nicks at the top and base of the spine. A previous owner's name is written neatly on the inside front cover and there is a neat bookseller's stamp on a front end paper. The binding is tight and there is fairly mild tanning throughout.
