This is an interesting study of what might normally be expected to be a bit of a sideshow to the main Malaysian political scene. However the 1999 Sabah state elections came amidst a period of turmoil when Malaysia's then strongman, Mahathir, had sacked his deputy, Anwar Ibrahim, leading to widespread demonstrations against the regime. So these state elections were seen as a litmus test of the popularity of the Barisan Nasional, the ruling party, who had also a shaky hold on power in the state due to defections from the previous state governing party, the Sabah Unity Party. 84 pages:
