Institutions and Social Mobilization: The Chinese Education Movement in Malaysia, 1951-2011
--
Ang Ming Chee
Unlike Thailand to the North and Indonesia to the South, Malaysia is unique amongst Southeast Asian countries with a large Chinese minority, where that minority has been able to preserve their right to education in Chinese. This is a history of the Chinese Malaysian movement, known as Dong Jiao Zong, which has despite being called 'communists' and 'extremists' by Government leaders in the past, managed through careful and determined action to produce one of the more robust educational systems in the country today. Ironically because of the schools' high standards of excellence and the more recent emergence of China in the region, it is not unusual for children from other communities to attend these schools as well. 279 pages.
