Home is The Sailor:
The Sea Life of William Brown, Master Mariner and Penang Pilot
William Blain
A biography of a well travelled merchant seaman, who amongst other things, was a witness to the attack of the Emden on shipping in Penang harbour during World War I. About half the book is about Brown's experiences in the Far East, mostly in Penang. He felt that the World War made a break with the past when Penang was no longer run by business men and civil servants who also made time to befriend Malayans and took an interest in the countryside. Instead Penand succumbed to 'the office class.' 253 pages..
