The author is the daughter of a Punjabi father and Chinese mother, who despite family opposition, married in 1966. The book really tells us how they got to that point and what happened afterwards as Chauly reveals the results of burrowings through generations of family history with which many other children of the Chinese and Indian disapora can identify. It's also part of the people's history of Malaysia, i.e. how cultures endured and changed and then contributed to a new Malaysian culture. Fortunately the author's ancestors left behind lots of written and photographic material to enable her to bring this fascinating story to us. 335 page with photographs, maps and a family tree.
