Chinese Business in Malaysia: Accumulation, Accommodation and Ascendance
---
Terence E Gomez
Gomez, one of Malaysia's leading economists, undertook this study of the country's eight largest Chinese run publicly listed companies in order to determine the extent to which a common ethnicity shaped both practice and co-operation. Despite, at least, public criticism of the dominance of Chinese business by the Government party, UMNO, Gomez did not find his subjects either defensive or operating as a clique. He speculates that the situation may be different among more vulnerable small and medium enterprises in the country and suggests this as a topic for future research.
