Admiral Matelieff's Singapore and Johor, 1606-1616
Peter Borschberg (ed)
Admiral Cornelis Matelieff de Jonge led the Dutch attempt to dislodge the Portuguese from Melaka in 1606. The attempt failed, but during his time in the region Matelieff sent letters and reports home assessing future Dutch possibilities in the Malay Archipelago. This book contains excerpts of the admiral's writings on regional politics, the possibility of setting up a Dutch base in Singapore or Johor and general trading opportunities in the area. 242 pages with an index, contemporary maps and illustrations, a glossary, list of place names and a bibliography.
