A Manual of the Malay Language
With an Introductory Sketch of the Sanskrit Element in Malay
The purpose of this manual, originally written in 1881, was to be, according to the author, the first introduction for non-native Malay speakers to colloquial Malay. Previous manuals had been more academic. Having said that, the 210 pagemanual is preceded by a 48 page a sholarly discourse on the influence of Sanskrit on the language. The remainder of the book contains a review of the main elements of grammar together with exercises for the learner.
