Although chattered companies as a vehicle for colonialism had fallen out of favour with the collapse of the British East India Company in the mid 19th century, the North Borneo company managed to get British Government approval and somehow establish a claim to being the longest surviving of such companies in the 20th century. Tregonning, who also wrote a British Government propaganda piece on North Borneo, sets a more academic tone in this survey of its history from initial American enterprise to eventual British colony. Good Paperback. Second Edition. Originally published as Under Chartered Company Rule. 275 pages with a bibliographical note, bibliography, a couple of black and white plates and maps and an index.
