This is a tribute to a significant advocate for the right of different language groups in Malaysia to be taught in their mother tongue. He was a key spokesman for the Chinese community in pre-independence constitutional talks. However he ran up against the new country's rulers, being stripped of his citizenship and teacher's licence, when he opposed Government plans to restrict their funding of education to schools in the Malay and English languages. Nevertheless he was accorded the title "Soul of the Malaysian Chinese" by his community in recognition of his unstinting efforts in education, civil rights and nation building.
