Two Plays About Malaya:
Strangers in the Land
by Mona Brand
For Our Mother Malaya
by Lesley Richardson
These two plays are efforts by British anti-colonialists to portray the situation in Malaya at the time of the 'Emergency' in the early 1950s. One of them, Strangers in the Land, was considered so inflammatory that it was banned by the British censor for a while. The first play tells the story of the opposition of a fiancee of a 'white settler' to methods used to protect his plantation and the second play, For Our Mother Malaya, tries to show 'what motives influence the guerillas.' The 144 page book ends with English translations of four revolutionary songs apparently popular at the time.
