At the time of writing a total of 127 snake species had been identified as living on the Malay Peninsula and Singapore. Tweedie, who was director of the Raffles Museum at he time of publication, noted that very little research on the country's snake population had been done so far and hoped that this book would stimulate further interest. Condition: The dust jacket, now protected in a plastic sleeve, is a bit frayed around the edges and has a mark from a removal of a sticker on the front. The inside of the hinge between the back cover and the book is beginning to crack, but this has not affected the binding. The binding is tight, the text is clear and there is mild to medium tanning throughout.
