Born in India, he just happened to turn up in Abyssinia (Ethiopia), New Zealand and Malaya at important times in their history. In the case of each country he was at the centre of attempts to extend British influence. In Abyssinia and New Zealand he was decorated for his military activities and in Malaya he organised a force to put down disturbances in Larut, where he later became the British representative.
