The Pasai Chronicle
Russell Jones (Trans)
This handsome volume is the most recent translation into English of this Malay language ancient chronicle (Hikayat). The Hikayat records the arrival of Islam in the 14th century in the sultanate of Pasai in Sumatra and the sultanate's subsequent history. As Jones points out in his introduction, the main purpose of this work was didactic, i.e. so that its readers could learn from the lessons of the past. Since pre-Islamic history was very fresh in the minds of the authors, charming myths and folklore also feature strongly in the text. 190 pages with a pull out map and genealogical table. Please see the scan of the contents page for further details.
