The Manners and Customs of the Chinese in the Straits Settlements
J. D Vaughan
This book is based on notes that Vaughan made when he was superintendent of police in Penang in the mid 1850s. He lived in Malaya for nearly 40 years as a policeman and then as a practicing lawyer. Although the notes can be disjointed at times, they carry unusual contemporary detail of a community whom he considered to be 'a superior race.' 126 pages with an introduction by Wilfred Blythe.
