The Malayan Peninsula

PJ Begbie

Begbie, an army officer in the 19th century, fortunately found time to write of his experiences and his observations while on duty in the early stages of the British involvement in Malaya. What is notable about his accounts of the Dutch administration in Melaka, the British intervention in Naning, the founding of Singapore and his history and account of the manners and customs of the Malays, is that it differs little from what modern research has produced. 523 pages, a 19 page appendix and a fold out map.
