The Malay Peoples and Their Languages
Asmah Haji Omar
This book came out of the UNESCO Malay Cultural Study Project started in 1975. UNESCO defined the term 'Malay' as all Austronesian peoples in the archipelago. The purpose of the project was to produce a handbook of all the languages spoken by these peoples. The author was responsible for the Malaysian section of the project. In this book she gives an outline of all the 23 languages spoken by these peoples in Malaysia, including those of indigenous peoples in Borneo, but not those on the peninsula. There is also an ethnographic sketch of each community. 682 pages
