The author originally spent  long periods living with families in a Malay fishing community on the island of Langkawi off the north-west coast of Malaysia as part of preparation for her Ph.D. thesis. She later came back to the island, revised many of her findings and wrote this book that explains how she saw the role of women in forging a common identity amongst families who originated on the island or had come there from the mainland, Thailand and Indonesia.
