The Guthrie flagship:
United Sua Betong
C. Northcote Parkinson
The author, better known for later writing Parkinson's law about the frustrating workings of bureaucracy, was commissioned by United Sua Betong, one of the most successful rubber companies, to write this book as a bit of 'puff 'for the company on its 50th anniversary in 1959. It was never published as it covered too much extraneous matter for his employers and poked fun at them. JM Gullick was fortunately commissioned by MBRAS to edit the work for publication forty years after it was written. The book encapsulates the early history of the Malayan rubber industry from trial and error, through years of boom and bust to eventual stability and success 141 pages.
