The author, an Irishman married to a Malaysian, has set his first novel in the tin-mining camps fo the Kinta Valley of Perak in the 1890s. The central character, Aisha, who pans the nine's streams for tin, attracts the interest of the camp's proprietor, a young miner and the camp's overseer all of whom have their designs on her. There's plenty of drama awash with historical detail. 381 pages.
