The British Settlement of Penang

--

James Low

The title chosen by the editors of this reprint is an abbreviation of the more ponderous, but more descriptive, title of the original which made plain that this was a a work about 'the soil and agriculture' of the island and Province Wellesley. The book was originally written in 1836 in the middle of Low's 30 year career in the Straits Settlements, mainly in Penang. He was an East India Company employee, but also a land owner and a pioneer planter when most of his compatriots were more interested in trade While two thirds of this 329 page book is concerned with agriculture, the remainder is a survey of administrative practices and the life of the majority of the inhabitants of Penang and Province Wellesley.
