Tan Kim Seng: A Biography
It is unlikely that Malaya and Singapore would have experienced the same rapid commercial development from the late 18th century onwards had it not been for Chinese businessmen, like the subject of this book. Born in Malacca at the beginning of the 19th century as a third generation Chinese in the city, he soon moved to Singapore within years of its establishment as a trading post. It was not long before he became a force to be reckoned with in the both Singapore and Malacca, running successful businesses, mediating in clan rivalries, opening Singapore's first Chinese school and making his mark generally as a benefactor to the wider community. New Hardback. First Edition. 147 pages with several, mainly colour illustrations, an extensive Tan family tree and a bibliography.
